“Wildflower Delight”

Crested Butte, CO, is known for its wildflowers and festival to celebrate them in July. Recently, I traveled to this area and participated in a Wildflower Photography class led by our instructor Keith Snell. Keith is a great photography teacher and you might want to check out his Spirit of Photography website. I participated in this class last year and it may become a yearly experience for me as it is awesome! These scenes exemplify the outstanding color variations of nature photography.

This is the beautiful Gunnison Mariposa Lily found in Crested Butte. Each cup of the flower had its own depth of field. Therefore, I surprised myself and was quite pleased with the crisp focus of the entire flower.

“Macro Photography at its Best”

In the world of macro photography and wildflower photography, it is a challenge to create depth of field. It takes photographic attention to composition, exposure and the elements (like wind, sun, clouds, shade) in the immediate environment. However, when finding these flowers and concentrating on replicating their image, I do become aware of the magnificence of the simple beauty around me. I hope that my photographs honor this creative spirit of life. Macro photography is a challenge, however, it allows me to focus on, and appreciate, the essence of life.

“Indian Paintbrush”

“The Paintbrush evoked the Native American legend of a young brave who tried to paint the sunset with his warpaints. Frustrated that he could not match the brilliance of nature, he ask for guidance from the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit gave him paintbrushes laden with the colors he so desired. With these, he painted his masterpiece and left the spent brushes in fields across the landscape. These brushes sprouted the flowers we now so wonderfully love!”

“A Mighty Presence”

I do not know the name of this small flower. However, I do know that upon close inspection it is magical and displays a mighty presence. In terms of technique, this is a very good example of macro photography. Near and far are in focus and I achieved this by deciding the front and back of the image and focusing 1/3 into this distance. I used my 60mm macro lens and F16 as my aperture. Also, I used my Depth of Field Preview button to check to see the exact image that would be in focus. If you have a macro lens, try this technique. It is best to use a tripod for macro photography, if you have one.
