“Best Friends”

I could not resist one additional post of my beloved Nikki with her best friend, Sammy. Looking at his image conveys a message of friendship, trust, loyalty and companionship. May these qualities be an experience in all of your lives.

“The Eyes of Love”

Here is a series of photographs of my beloved siberian husky, Nikki.  I have a fascination with the beauty of Nikki’s eyes.  Sometimes she seems so wolf-life to me.  Enjoy this portrait.  As mentioned many times, if you can focus on the eyes of an animal and create a sharp focus with them, it dignifies both the animal and the photograph.

“Challenge Your Perspective”

Think creatively with animal photography.  Just changing my position and waiting patiently until Nikki shifted her body position created this perception of looking and yearning in a seemingly wild landscape. Enjoy!

“Portrait”

When photographing a pet portrait, try to be eye level as this seemingly gives the pet a position of power.  This technique is also very good to use with children.  Get low and be eye level with them.    As with this photograph, a “profile” can be both a unique and interesting portrait as well.  Enjoy!

“Youthful Sparing”

Here was a wonderful opportunity with animal photography as the elk were sparing together in a field.  It was a spontaneous moment that nature photographers love – being in the right place at the right moment.  When you are on your photo excursions, look around and really be present with the world around you.

“Fireworks and Small-town America”

I live in a small town – Lyons, Colorado.  Each year there is a Parade of Lights before Christmas followed by fireworks.  Why fireworks in December you might ask?  Well, this area is so dry that it is the best time of year concerning safety.  The “parade” is quite the small-town America experience.  I had a big smile on my face as I watched the band directors leading their marching bands with all musicians, including the Director, wearing blinking Holiday lights around their necks.  I watched pick-up trucks drive by with lighted Christmas trees in the back and dogs with glowing Santa hats peeking out the passenger windows.  Floats carried gleeful children, an electric car carried a teenager pretending to surf, the American flag was carried with pride and everyone cheered.  This definitely reflected a true holiday spirit of joy and community.  As an ending, the festive parade was followed by a great display of fireworks.

“Fireworks – Slow and Steady”

When shooting fireworks,  a good mantra to follow is:  slow and steady. Try to capture the event with a very slow shutter speed.  In this series of photographs, my shutter speed varied from 1/5 second to 1 second. “Steady” can be achieved in several ways.  If you have a tripod, use it.  If not, try to find a tree, fence or something very solid.  Brace your camera, lower your shutter speed and experiment.  Wait for the firework burst of light and depress your shutter speed.  Good luck!

“Celebration”

Fireworks also represent celebration.  They represent fun, aliveness, happiness and the honor of an event-holiday-memory.   So, at this time, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday filled with peace, joy, family, friends and the light of love.  Also, I wish all good health and abundance in 2011.  Peace and blessings to all!

“A Very Cute Husky Puppy”

As most of you know, I love Siberian Huskies and I am the proud owner of one – my beloved Nikki.  A friend recently had a new litter and I could not resist another photo opportunity.  I was sitting on the ground and trying to be eye-level to give the puppy a different perspective. Notice how the background is soft.
