I am a former teacher and, due to Facebook and other avenues of networking, several students from many years past have contacted me recently.  I have been overwhelmed with their comments and memories of our experiences together.  The teaching profession is not one for immediate gratification.  Teachers give of themselves entirely in the hopes of inspiring just one student to achieve potential.  Most teachers complete their tenure never really knowing the impact of lives touched.  So, I offer this image as dedication to all teachers and to my students who have recently renewed contact.  Thank you so much.  I am so proud of all of you and I celebrate all of you with a new day of beauty.  My wish is true health and happiness and I send you my special love.

Sometimes I am more than amazed with the colors of the sunrise here in Lyons, CO.  I start my days by saying:  Wow! - Oh My Gosh! - I can’t believe this!  Then, I run for my camera.

I enjoy the choreography of Nikki’s running.  She reminds me of a wolf in the wild.  However, my Nikki always has a smile on her face when she runs.  The joy of her freedom is quite evident.

Well, Nikki is extremely athletic.  However, sometimes she misses her jump.  Here is a “belly-flop” that was quite enjoyable.

Sidra, Lady of the Midnight Sun is the official name of my beloved Nikki.  Here is a playful series of photographs for your enjoyment.  Obviously, she really loves the snow.  This is nature photography displaying the true nature of Siberian Huskies.

Here we have best friends running and playing in the dog park together.  I think that this photograph is a good example of great composition.  Capturing Nikki’s one eye as she is running behind Sammy leaves the viewer with creative interpretations for the moment.  I think this is very unique and a great intuitive moment. Having Nikki in the image also creates color, contrast and dimension to the photograph.

When photographing action, try using a high shutter speed- 1/250 second or higher.  This will automatically mean that you will be using a lower f-stop and less depth of field.  If you are hand-holding your camera, your background will probably be “soft and slightly out of focus” to highlight your subject.  However, it depends on how much “light” you have as you are photographing.  This action shot of Nikki was taken during a very bright day with lots of white snow at 1/2,000 second shutter speed.  However, the entire scene looks fairly crisp.  Enjoy!

Here is a wonderful composition captured with my Nikki.  Notice her curled position and the sharp focus (and inclusion) of one eye.  Soft and sharp, pattern and flow, comfort and joy.  These are all captured by using Nikki’s sleeping position as a tight composition and capturing Nikki’s eye while still open before she fell asleep.  Hopefully, this photograph will inspire you to perceive sleeping positions as composition opportunities when photographing animals - and, especially children.  Good luck!

Sunrise is a special time filled with an awareness of opportunities for the new day.  This holiday season I say peace to you with this “Dreamscape” sunrise photograph taken in Lyons, CO.   I hope that your new year is filled with many blessings each new day and the magic and beauty of this spectacular sunrise with each new opportunity.  When I really look at this sunrise, I see and imagine the abundance that this universe presents to us.  I wish you all this abundance each day.  Happy New Year!
