“Macro Photography and the Rule of Thirds”
Are you striving to attain good depth of field and well-focused images with nature photography? Well, here are some hints.
- Set your camera on manual mode and select a high aperture number (usually F16 to F20 would achieve good results).
- Use a tripod. If you select high aperture numbers, it means that you will be synchronized to use a slower shutter speed and the camera needs to be stable.
- Visually determine the depth of field (near and far edge) of the image. For example, if you are photographing a flower, you might want the front edge of the flower to the rear edge of the flower to be in focus. In other words, choose the composition of the image that you would like to be in focus.
- Visually determine 1/3 the distance from the near edge of the image that you would like to be in focus. Focus on this spot and use manual focus to be accurate. However, when you look through the viewfinder, the image will appear out of focus. This is normal.
- If you have a depth of field preview button on your camera, condition yourself to use it when doing macro work. Before taking the actual photograph, you can check your focus and depth of field by depressing the depth of field preview button on your camera.

“Photographing Water with Slow Shutter Speeds”
When photographing water, try using a slow shutter speed to create a “cotton candy” effect with the flow of the water. This will require a tripod, however, the results are stunning. As indicated in previous blog posts, all images on this blog can be created as fine art prints for any visitor. Simply, go the the purchasing page of my website and give me a call or email me at orders@peacemakersart.com with your selections. No comments“My Personal Heroes”
It is time for high school graduation ceremonies and I wanted to take time to acknowledge my former high school students who remained as middle school advisors for community service this year. When I retired from teaching last year, I was unsure if my middle school community service program would continue. However, my high school juniors decided to dedicate their senior year to working with a “new” teacher to assist her throughout the school year. To me, this was amazing and I am honored and humbled by their acts of kindness and dedication to service. So, I wanted to use this public forum to share my respect, honor and love for each of “my” high school students.
So, to all of you, this is my graduation speech for you…
I wish you the best in all your future endeavors and please know that you will always have a special place in my heart. You are my personal heroes and a constant reminder to me of the far-reaching effects of compassion. I am so clear now that the people you serve receive your love and you are empowered by the experience of making a difference in our world with your actions. Ultimately, just as powerful, are the observers of your service. We, who look at your actions for the good with awe at your incredible aliveness, are blessed a hundred-fold observing your actions of love. We become inspired. We become hopeful. We become whole with humanity. You change our actions for the good by being role models for us.
I have always called you the peacemakers of the world as you are our future leaders. It was all of you who inspired the name of my inspirational art photography endeavor - PeacemakersArt.com. So, to each of you, I send you my love forever and my admiration for your integrity to “be” the change in the world that will bring peace.
With special love,
Ms. Gaia

Here is an image that truly represents inspirational nature photography. Although this appears as abstract art, if you look closely, you will notice that this is the crest of a mountain top. These are the San Juan Mountains (specifically Corkscrew Gulch) in Colorado. The colors are spectacular and reflect hues of nature, harmony, essence and creative spirit. So, to me, this image represents the wholeness and integrity of our human spirit. If you have an interest in purchasing this image as a fine art print, please click on the link to the purchasing page of my website www.PeacemakersArt.com for information concerning sizes, matting and framing colors. Also, you can me personally at 303-823-0317 to order or email me at orders@peacemakersart.com to place an order. In fact, if you like any of the images displayed on this blog, they are available for fine art print purchase. Please call or email to make your selections. Several years ago, I visited Telluride and did a jeep tour into the backcountry. The remains of the Tomboy Mine fascinated me and I was inspired to find out more about the early life of the people in the mining town of Tomboy. Consequently, I found a wonderful book in the local Telluride bookstore. The title is “Tomboy Bride: A Woman’s Personal Account of Life in Mining Camps of the West” by Harriet Fish Backus. This is a great read for anyone interested in history, the beauty of our land and the role of women in early pioneer days. My travels have taught me that inspirational nature photography comes in many forms. The beauty of the land can motivate us to honor our country and the integrity of our heritage. For additional fine art prints, please visit my gallery at www.PeacemakersArt.com and also read my inspirational writings in my fine art note card gallery and motivational poster gallery. All of my writings have been inspired by nature.
